Biography of James S. Russell, AIAMr. Russell is the first architecture critic for Bloomberg, the financial-information services, news, and media company. His is one of the few truly national voices in architecture, reaching 260,000 financial professionals, and 350 publications worldwide through the company's wire service. His Bloomberg stories are also seen on the world-wide web and he appears on Bloomberg radio and TV. He was an editor for 18 years at Architectural Record magazine, the premier American journal for practicing architects and the magazine of the American Institute of Architects. His writing on a variety of design, construction-technology and professional practice topics for the magazine helped it earn a National Magazine Award for General Excellence (2003) as well as numerous other industry awards. He also contributes articles on architecture and design to numerous other publications, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, I.D., the Harvard Design Magazine, Business Week, and Details. He created “Sticks & Stones,” a widely read blog on the influential ArtsJournal.com site. He has taught at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation. Before becoming a full-time writer, Mr. Russell practiced architecture with firms in New York City, Philadelphia, and Seattle. He is a registered architect in New York and a member of the American Institute of Architects. He is active with the Architectural League and the Municipal Arts Society, in New York. Mr. Russell earned a Masters of Architecture degree from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Design degree from the University of Washington. He also attended the Evergreen State College. He was born in Seattle and resides in New York City. |
